On June 11 2020, Alice Marie White was lastly reunited with her favourite “weirdo”; late spouse, crib opponent and political debate partner John “Papa” McCauley. In each other they truly found that someone they wanted to annoy forever and ever.

Alice was renowned for her storytelling, not holding back her opinion and telling it like it was. One way or the other everyone always knew where they stood with her. She liked you or she didn't, it was black or white. As her children though we are still trying to figure out which one it was for us, although we do have a pretty good idea who the favourite was either way.

Born in Miramichi, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Shirley (Bass) MacDonald.

Left with decades of colorful memories are her younger siblings James (Paula) MacDonald and Sandra Taylor, of Fredericton, NB. She was predeceased by brother-in-law Daniel Taylor of Fredericton, NB.

Alice leaves behind an oddly dysfunctional family fueled by laughter, love and sarcasm. A family that anyone would be proud of. At least that’s what she always told us coming up to Christmas and birthdays anyway.

Left to squabble over her vast fortune, real estate holdings and "treasures" are her two daughters Elizabeth (Kent) Pickford of Wainwright, AB, and Kellea (Derek) Sangster of Miramichi, NB. Her grandchildren Joshua, Mikaela, Matthew, MacKenzie and Michael learned many valuable lessons from “Nanny” including, but not limited to, “if you get the urge to clean the house, go lay down and it will pass”.

Everyone who remembers Alice is asked to celebrate her life in their own way, like telling a ‘she wasn’t so bad’ or ‘remember when’ story of their choosing. Try putting on Conway Twitty’s ‘Hello Darlin’ and raising a glass of Kahlua or Caesar in her memory.

The family would like to thank Dr. Luc Arsenault, Dr. Black, the entire nursing staff at the Miramichi Regional Hospital and her caregiver Helen McCann for the kind and compassionate care provided to our mother.

Alice requested cremation. Her ashes will be kept around as long as they match the décor.

There will be a private family service held at a later date.

Funeral arrangements are in the care of Northumberland Funeral Home, 102 Pleasant St, telephone (506) 622-7741.

As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Miramichi SPCA.

Instead of flowers, we ask that you simply do one irregular task for another human being today; make them smile, make them laugh, make their day brighter, shown them that they are not alone.

To make a difference in someone’s life you don’t have to be beautiful, brilliant, perfect or rich. You just need to care enough to be there in the moment.
