It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Clayton James Matchett, who passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Tuesday July 1st, 2025, at the age of 87.
Born in Sunny Corner on February 7, 1938, he was the beloved son of the late Ernest and Nancy (McLean) Matchett.
In his early teens Clayton went to work in the woods, cutting pulp alongside his father. During those years is when he developed his work ethic. Until his last day, the best compliment he could give others was, “He’s a hard worker". He learned the trucking business from his father in law, Huxley. He then went on to be the owner/operator of his own trucks and equipment. His children would help by running loader or driving truck, through this he was able to teach them the same lessons of hard work. During the trucking off season he would work as a car salesman. When he retired from trucking he took on car sales full-time which suited him perfectly. He worked for many dealers in Miramichi and was well respected for his honesty. Clayton loved cars and was known by many for keeping his cars shining in the car port.
Clayton loved many things, but his family was number one. He loved when they would visit and cherished each moment spent with them.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Betty Matchett. Together they loved to go on a Friday night date to Estey’s Fish & Chips and always enjoyed a Sunday drive.
Clayton is also survived by his three children, Perry Matchett (Cheryl), Susan Dunnett (Keith) and Barry Matchett (Theresa); his three grandchildren, Brady (Chelsey), Brendan (Jade) and Jenna; his three great-grandchildren, Clayton, Luke and Ella and his brother Bill (Donna) of Moncton.
Besides his parents, Clayton is predeceased by his brothers, Jarvis and Beverly Matchett.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff of Flanagan Court at Losier Hall for their excellent care and compassion during Clayton’s time of need.
Following Clayton’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A graveside service for immediate family will take place at a later date.
Funeral arrangements are in the care of Northumberland Funeral Home & Crematorium, 102 Pleasant St., telephone (506) 622-7741. Where your loved one never leaves our care.
