Michael Coster

May 9, 1935 — May 22, 2025

The family bids a heartfelt farewell to Michael “Mike” Coster, who passed away on May 22, 2025, at the age of 90. Born on May 9, 1935, to Arthur and Catherine Coster, Mike lived a life marked by dedication, adventure, and a deep love for family and education.

Mike excelled as an athlete in various sports during his time at Rothesay Collegiate and Bowdoin College. His passion for learning led him to the University of New Brunswick, where he embarked on a career in education. By the age of 32, he had already risen to the role of District Superintendent—a testament to his vision and leadership in shaping young minds.

A lifelong champion of education, Mike believed that learning went beyond textbooks. He saw it as a way to build futures, inspire dreams, and nurture potential. His unwavering commitment fostered a spirit of excellence in every school he touched, leaving an indelible mark on generations of students and educators alike.

Beyond his professional achievements, Mike was a devoted community member, serving on various boards and committees. Yet, his greatest joy was his family. Becoming a father at 22, he and his beloved wife, Shirley, dedicated themselves to creating an unforgettable childhood for their four children. Together, they filled their home with cherished memories that will live on forever.

Mike’s love of gardening and music was matched only by his enthusiasm for adventure. Whether it was driving into the countryside in a convertible with the top down to find the perfect Christmas tree, packing up the car for an Expos game or concert in Montreal, or the unforgettable moments when he’d press the gas pedal as his kids sang the Batman theme song standing in the backseat—he made life an exciting journey.

Later in life, Mike met Jean and they forged a bond and a deeply meaningful relationship. They married in 2005 and spent 20 plus years together. The relationship was strong and they remained committed to each other until the end. From the outset, they thrived in each others company. Gardening and maintaining their property were paramount for the couple and unrivaled in many ways. Mike took pride and joy when all of the hard work was recognized by the community. Being the humble man he was, he would smile proudly when receiving recognition for their efforts, whether it be in the form of an Award or a comment from neighbours and friends.

His warmth, kindness, and humor touched lives far beyond the classroom, and though he is no longer with us, his legacy endures in the countless lives he shaped.

Mike was predeceased by his parents, his brother Jim, his first wife Shirley, and his daughter Susan.

He is survived by his second wife, Jean, and her family—Zack Aube, Ashley Aube, and Bobby Carroll all of Miramichi, and two granddaughters, Kiera and Charlotte Kelly of Chipman

Mike is also survived by his children: Cathy (Dennis Kingston) of Miramichi, Jon (Nancy Davidson) of Fredericton, and Mike (Camilla Callie-Coster) of Sydney, Australia.
