Shirley Nicholson

September 20, 1926 — August 4, 2025

Our family is saddened to share that Shirley Elaine (Hume) Nicholson of Miramichi, New Brunswick, passed away at Miramichi Regional Hospital on August 4th, 2025, at the age of 98.

Born in Williamstown, Carleton County, NB, Shirley was the daughter of the late Myrtle (Smith) and Frank Hume. She attended Business College in Saint John and worked as an Executive Secretary for Hatfield Industries in Hartland during the mid 1940’s. Her life changed when she married Charlie Nicholson, started a family, and moved numerous times throughout New Brunswick due to her husband’s work with the Department of Fisheries.

In 1962 they moved to Miramichi and made it their forever home. Shirley was a devoted member of St. James and St. John United Church and contributed countless volunteer hours through her work with the UCW (United Church Women). She was an avid reader as well as a gardener, cook, seamstress and crafter. Her family and friends will always remember her smile, kindness, patience, sense of humour, listening ear and open-mindedness.

Shirley will be dearly missed by her loving daughters, Connie MacRae & Margaret Murray; sons-in-law, Dale MacRae, Tom Murray & Wayne Cook; granddaughters Krista Shannon & Allison Murray, and grandson in-law, Kirk Shannon. She will also be greatly missed by her honorary daughter/granddaughters Sonya, Laura and Sarah Martin; best friend Edith Creighton; cousin Iva O’Donnell and many others.

Besides her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Charlie; daughter, Carol Cook; and infant son, Andrew.

The visitation and funeral service will be held at Northumberland Funeral Home, 102 Pleasant Street, Miramichi. Visitation will be Friday, August 8th from 6pm-8pm. The Funeral service will be held at  Northumberland Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, August 9th at 11am with Rev. Alice Szemok officiating. Internment will take place at Miramichi Cemetery.
