Margaret Lou (Green) Sweeney, 82, of Miramichi, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family, on Friday, September 5, 2025.
Born in Fredericton, NB, to the late Charles and Dorothy (MacKinnon) Green, Margaret was a vibrant soul whose warmth and generosity touched countless lives. A devoted member of St. Michael’s Basilica and the Catholic Women’s League (CWL), she found joy in her faith and cherished serving her church community. Her compassionate heart shone through her volunteer work, tirelessly helping to feed the hungry and homeless on the Miramichi, leaving a legacy of kindness.
Margaret’s zest for life was evident in her active lifestyle. In her earlier years, she loved golf, biking, bowling, curling, skiing, and snowshoeing, and in later years, she embraced swimming and daily walks, always moving with energy and grace. Above all, she was a cherished friend, with many sharing heartfelt stories of her loyalty, laughter, and unwavering support.
She is deeply missed by her devoted husband, Hazen Sweeney of Miramichi; daughters Paula Sweeney of Durham Bridge and Sherry Sweeney (Doug) of Tampa, FL; sons Andrew Sweeney (Laurie) of Tampa, FL, and Patrick Sweeney (Vivian) of Mississauga, ON; nine grandchildren, Matthew, Charlie, Mary, Kate, Russell, Stuart, Molly, Roxanne, and Rebekah; and three great-grandchildren, Isaac, Tessa, and Leif. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers Paul Green, Gordon McGeehan, Ralph McGeehan, and Glenn McGeehan.
Visitation will be held at Northumberland Funeral Home, 102 Pleasant St., Miramichi, on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael’s Basilica on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., with Father Antonio Reyes officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society are appreciated, reflecting Margaret’s giving spirit.
