Joseph "Joe" Anthony Martin

August 18, 1951 – July 21, 2026

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph Anthony Martin on July 21, 2026, at the age of 74. He passed away peacefully at Percy's Place on Tuesday, July 21, 2026.

Joe was born in Toronto, Ontario, to Edmund and Madelaine Martin. Raised in the Catholic faith, he attended Catholic school during his early years, where he developed a lifelong relationship with the Lord that remained an important part of his life.

Music was one of Joe's greatest passions. He had a deep appreciation for all genres of music and was a talented percussionist, playing in several bands and serving in worship at churches attended by his family. Some of his children's fondest memories are of sitting with their father as music filled the room, listening as he drummed along on the table and challenging them to guess which band was playing.

After renewing his faith in the mid-1970s, Joe devoted much of his time to serving others. He volunteered extensively with individuals experiencing homelessness and addiction and participated in prison ministry through the Mustard Seed in Victoria, British Columbia.

In the early 1980s, Joe moved his family to Northern British Columbia in search of new opportunities, where they made their home for many years. Later, he returned to Victoria. Throughout his life, Joe faced personal struggles with addiction. In his mid-40s, he achieved lasting sobriety, an accomplishment of which he and his children were deeply proud. Inspired by his own journey, he earned certification in addiction services and dedicated many years to helping others find hope and recovery through his work in rehabilitation. In retirement, Joe settled in Upper Blackville, New Brunswick.

Joe will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Valerie Ann Martin and Amy Lynn Martin Schmalz; his son, Michael Martin; his sister, Patricia Martin; his brothers, Bill Martin and Michael Martin; his grandchildren, Daniel Martin, Ryan Acoin, Tricia Martin, Ashwynn Nault, Kimberly Schmalz, Keelan Martin, Aydan Martin, and Ryder Martin; his great-grandson, Toryn Schmalz; and several nieces and nephews.

Joe was predeceased by his parents, Edmund and Madelaine Martin; his brother, Jack Martin; and his beloved grandson, Eric Nault.

Though his path was not always easy, Joe's life reflected perseverance, faith, and a desire to help others. May he now find eternal peace in the presence of the Lord.

Psalm 34:19: "The righteous face many troubles, but the Lord delivers them from them all." 

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Interment will take place in Ontario, at a later date.

As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to a memorial of one's choice.
