James Albert Wood

April 10, 1940 — May 5, 2023

James Albert Wood, of Toronto, ON, passed away peacefully at the Toronto General Rehab Centre, on Friday, May 5, 2023, at the age of 83.

Born in Miramichi, he was the son of the late Robert Michael and Estella Katherine (Dennis) Wood.

A teacher by profession, he spent his formative years in Doaktown after which he joined the Lay order of Christian Brothers and continued teaching until his retirement. He left the order of Christian Brothers in 2002 and moved to Toronto where he remained until his death. Musically and creatively inclined, he pursued these interests during his retirement as well as being committed to social justice issues such as the homeless and hungry in Canada’s most affluent cities.

He will be greatly missed by his sister Bernadette Black (Late Daryl) of Miramichi; two brothers David Wood (Late Betty) of Miramichi and Kenneth Wood of Winnipeg, MB; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by half sisters Irene Mellin and Kathleen Dennis; and half brothers Bert Wood, Carl Wood, and Arnold Wood.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St Michael’s Basilica, on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at 11 am. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to a memorial of one’s choice.
