Grace (Sturgeon) Astle passed away peacefully at Percy’s Place on October 15, 2026, at the age of 94.
Born in White Rapids, NB, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Mariah (Sullivan) Sturgeon. She was a businesswoman, owning Astle’s General Store for over 25 years before retiring.
She had a passion for country music. Grace shared her own musical talents, playing guitar and singing all her life, in kitchens, living rooms, around campfires and on stages at Benefits or where ever she traveled, including England and Scotland. She shared the music and the stories of local communities and her experiences with a flare all her own. She was a true entertainer, always able to find a comical angle to any situation
She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Shirley (Astle) Whincop (Richard) of West Sussex, England, and her chosen daughter, Mildred Sullivan of White Rapids; her stepson, Darrell Astle of Millerton; her chosen grandchildren, Candace Sullivan and Melanie Underhill; her chosen great-grandchildren, Amelia Hayes, Madison Underhill, Brody Underhill, and Nate Underhill; as well as several nieces and nephews. Grace was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Hiram Astle; her sisters, Reta Sturgeon, Cora Curtis, Olive Tucker, and Mary Tucker; her brothers, William “Will” Sturgeon, David “Dave” Sturgeon, James “Jim” Sturgeon, Myles Sturgeon, Hazen Sturgeon, Norman “Norm” Sturgeon, and Lindsay Sturgeon; and her infant brothers, Clarence, Stirling, and Sherman.
Visitation will take place at Northumberland Funeral Home on Monday, October 19, 2026, from 2 pm to 4 pm and 6 pm to 8 pm. The funeral service will be held at Northumberland Funeral Home Chapel, on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at 2 pm, with Rev. Charlene Maguire MacKnight officiating.
