  • It is with heavy hearts that the family of Ernest Robert MacMillan announces his passing in his eighty-eighth year on January 13, 2016 at Spencer's Nursing Home in Moncton N.B. with family at his side.

Born in Benton, NB in 1928, he was the son of George and Amy (Kitchen) MacMillan and a long time resident of Miramichi. He started out as a White Rose Gasoline Dealer in 1955, acquired a Studebaker franchise shortly after, and transitioned to a Chrysler franchise in 1965. He ran the Chrysler franchise until 1980. During this time he became active in the local Chamber of Commerce, the Kinsmen Club and Municipal politics.

He served as Mayor from 1974 - 1979. In 1981 he became general-manager of the Miramichi Regional Development Corporation (MRDC). He retired from there in 1989.

In his retirement years, he obtained the franchise for the Academy of Learning and invested in local real estate. Ernie spent his retirement years in Edmonton, Miramichi and Moncton.

He is survived by his 4 sons, Dale (Virginia), Blake (Merita) of Miramichi, Colin (Georgina) of Moncton, Mark (Lorna) of Halifax and his daughter Karen (Michael Reynolds) of Edmonton. He also leaves 12 grandchildren Thomas, Scott, Joey, Kathleen, Ian, Elizabeth, Luke, Emily, Sarah, Andrew, Jake and Rachel. He will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents he was pre-deceased by his wife, and love of his life, Theresa (nee Regan) in 1997, two infant sons Stephen and Gregory and brothers Cecil, Clare, Russell, Gordon, and Jack. He was the last surviving member of his family.

Ernie will be remembered for his entrepreneurial spirit, his love of the Miramichi, his deep faith and his unconditional love and support of his family. He will be greatly missed.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Northumberland Funeral Home, on Sunday, January 17, 2016, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 18, 2016, at 2 pm, from St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, with Father Tom Fowler officiating.
