  • Mrs. Betty Sturgeon, of Blackville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 3, 2011, at Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital, at the age of 88.

    Born in Carbonear, Newfoundland, she was the daughter of the late John and Annie (Pike) Power. She lived in Blackville with her devoted husband, the late James Sturgeon who passed away in December 2009. Betty attended St Andrew’s United Church and was very active in the community and volunteered with the United Church Women, Women’s Institute, and the Red Hat Society. Betty moved to Fredericton In 2009 to live at Ste. Anne’s Court Retirement Home where in her final years enjoyed life and remained very active.

    Betty was a cherished stay at home Mom who loved and will be sadly missed by her sons David (Susan) and John (Trudy Abernethy) both of Fredericton; daughters Daphne (Richard) Jardine of Blackville and Diana of Switzerland; three sisters Marina Gilchrist, Margaret French, both of Ontario and Mira Nutter, of Pennsylvania; one brother-in-law Albert Archibald of Ontario; six grandchildren Serena, Alison, Laura, Jennifer, Matthew, and Bryan; three great grandchildren Kristy, Cassandra, and Lilly; and several nieces and nephews.

    Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by one brother Jack Power and one sister Jean Archibald.

    The family will receive relatives and friends from St Andrew’s United Church Hall, in Blackville, on Friday, August 5, 2011, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, from St Andrew’s United Church, in Blackville, at 2 pm. Interment will take place in the church cemetery.

    As expression of sympathy, donations may be made to St Andrew’s United Church, or to a memorial of one’s choice.
