It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Eldon James Gillespie, who was born on November 29, 1932, in Blissfield, New Brunswick, to the late Gordon and Grace Gillespie. Eldon passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at the Miramichi Regional Hospital, on September 13, 2025, at the age of 92.
Eldon will be forever loved and remembered by his devoted wife, Vera (Underhill) Gillespie; his daughter Janice Hogan (Sheldon); and his cherished grandchildren, Christopher (Julie), Corey (Katelin), and Laura. He was also a proud great-grandfather to Landyn, Everly, Sloan, Blayke, and Paxton, who brought him great joy.
He is survived by his brothers, Robert and Merlin, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Eldon was predeceased by his parents, Gordon and Grace Gillespie; his sisters, Joyce Ballard and Marie Cowie; sisters-in-law, Marie Underhill, Sister Eva Underhill, and Margaret Murphy; and brothers-in-law, Reginald Underhill, Herman Underhill, and Leslie Underhill.
Eldon spent his working years as a heavy equipment operator and truck driver, retiring proudly on his 65th birthday. Never one to sit still, he loved nothing more than working outdoors with his beloved big red tractor. Whether mowing grass in the summer or blowing snow in the winter, he could always be found lending a hand. After a snowstorm, he was often the first out clearing the driveways of neighbours, a quiet act of kindness that showed his generous spirit.
He had a gift for building and fixing just about anything- never with a blueprint, but always with ingenuity. If he couldn't find the part he needed, he would simply make his own. Among his many creations was a screenhouse, where he could often be found enjoying an afternoon nap on warm summer days.
Deeply dedicated to his church, Eldon served faithfully as a warden for many years and was always helping with repairs and maintenance, ensuring that everything was cared for. His seat in church was as much a fixture as the building itself, and it was a rare Sunday when he wasn't there.
In his later years, when mobility became more difficult, Eldon could often be found in his favorite chair in the corner of the sunroom. From there, he waved to anyone passing by. Neighbours became so accustomed to seeing him in the window that they would wave even when he wasn't there- a simple reminder of the warmth and consistency he brought to those around him.
Eldo also had a passion for travel, whether by car, plane, train, bus, or boat. He explored more of Canada and the US than most could dream of, treasuring the experiences and memories made along the way.
Eldon's hardworking hands, generous heart, and steadfast faith leave a lasting legacy. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
