It is with deep sorrow and much love, that we announce the passing of Derrick James Hare on Tuesday, March 31, 2026 at the Dr. Georges L. Dumont Hospital, at the age of 61.
Born in Newcastle, he was the son of Sandra (Cassidy) Hare and the late Robert “Bobby” Hare. He retired from the department of Natural Resources in 2025.
Derrick loved the outdoors. He would spend hours waiting patiently in the cold morning hours for a coyote that he could add to his winter collection, or in the fall, if he was lucky to get his moose license, sit in a chop down, again, waiting patiently. He also loved to go fishing. There were many early morning hours spent casting from the riverbanks. He operated his own saw mill for years, hauling cord after cord of wood, for either firewood or woodworking projects. His love for the outdoors is what drew him to live in the Hare homestead for over 20 years. It was a nature lovers paradise. And it was Derrick’s happy place. Luckily for him, Laura had supported his dream. He also loved a good game of crib. Many of his family members and friends have sat with him and had a good game of crib.
He will be greatly missed by his sons, Jordan Hare (Kristin) of Simcoe, ON, and Ryan Hare (Ali) of South Esk, both of whom he was incredibly proud of. His mother, Sandra Hare of Sunny Corner; his brother, Stephen Hare (Kathie) of Sunny Corner, his sisters, Judy Lavergne (Andrew) of Sunny Corner and Lori Anne Russell (Kevin) of South Esk; Poppa to his six beloved grandchildren: Sadie, Lincoln, Jude, Brooks, Georgia, and Theodore; mother-in-law, Gail Culligan; sisters-in-law, Debbie Emerson, Christina Whitney, and Lisa Vanderbeck; brother-in-law, Phillip Foran; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides his father, he was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife Laura (Foran) Hare.
In keeping with his wishes, there will be no visitation. A private celebration will be held for close family and friends, and interment will take place at Boom Road Pentecostal Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Servant’s Heart Ministries or to a memorial of one’s choice.
Funeral arrangements are in the care of Northumberland Funeral Home & Crematorium, 102 Pleasant St., telephone (506) 622-7741.
