He was a graduate of North and South Esk Regional High School and the Maritime College of Forestry Technology in Fredericton. He enjoyed gardening and loved animals, especially his cats, and was a fan of harness racing.
He married the love of his life, Patricia "Patsy" (Walsh) Johnston, in Renous in 1964, and together they devoted many years to volunteering at Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Church and collecting for the Canadian Kidney Foundation. For Delbert, family was everything. He had an unconditional love and devotion to serve his wife, his children, his parents, and grandchildren.

Besides his wife, Patricia "Patsy" (Walsh) Johnston, he was predeceased by their infant son, John, and his sister Mona Christina.
